Green Service Projects - 20 Service Project Ideas That Help the Planet

Here are several ideas for Green Service Projects:

1. Energy Audit. Use of electricity and gas is a large driver of greenhouse gas and cost. There are many good energy audit forms available on the internet. Download some, modify for your needs and audit the school and other large businesses. Make specific recommendations to reduce usage with sensors, timers, ballst, light bulbs, insulation and other methods. Consider volunteering to do audits for older folks in your community and try to get funds from the community or sponsors to help them reduce their energy usage.

2. Compost. Large portions of landfill garbage can be composted. Start one at home and then work with institutional and restaurant kitchens to develop compost processes and recipients. Consider selling compost to gardeners. Measure the amount of compost generated in a week and extrapolate to show the annual impact per house or per school/institution.

Green Service Projects - 20 Service Project Ideas That Help the Planet

3. Plastic Bottle Recycling. Many millions of soda bottles are landfilled each year. Many schools still sell drinks in plastic bottles. Consider building or obtaining plastics-only recycling containers and contacting your community recycling center to arrange for pickup. Don't forget the concession stands and other outdoor areas. Measure and communicate the amount of bottles saved and show some items made from the bottles.

4. Compact Flourescent Drive. Work with a local hardware or department store to offer special sales on compact fluorescent bulbs and sell them as a fund-raiser. The recipients get a deal on the bulbs and support a good cause, and they will save energy for them. Make some conservative calculations of the dollar and electricity savings from each kit sold, and show it as a graph or thermometer.

5. Metals recycling in the kitchen. Many cafeterias use large cans for food. Put a bin to collect rinsed cans and either recycle them or use them for planting in other projects. The metal has good recycle value.

6. Plant Trees. You can either sprout your own seedlings or contact a nursery to see if they can obtain and donate them. Contact landowners for permission to replant, and calculate and show the carbon offset you will generate in the next 1,10,20 years from your planted trees. Get lots of others to participate in an event, perhaps on Earth Day or Arbor Day.

7. Urban Recovery. If there are areas in your town or city that are abandoned and unused, do some research to find the owners and determine if it can either be cleaned up, torn down or made into a park or green space. Do some community organizing and make a large project to create a playground or other space that the community will appreciate.

8. School Carpool Club. Many teens drive to school. Try to organize them into groups so that they can share rides with each other and save some gas and emissions. Do the math on the average car, miles to school, mileage and the monthly pocket impact to each student that drives if they carpool 1 day/week.

9. Computer Recycling Drive. Make contact with a firm that recycles old computer equipment, research that their disposition is environmentally secure and protects the old user's data, and organize a drive to collect old machines. You may also be able to cobble together a few machines that you can reformat and load Linux and free, open-source programs to donate to neighborhood clubs, churches, homeless shelters and similar areas.

10. Environmental Awareness Education. Put together a slide show and some fun experiments for elementary-age kids and do a road show in your school district. Keep the ideas clear and get the kids excited about what they can do to save the earth.

11. Green Rooftop. A flat roof covered with plants will lower heating and cooling losses and will better use rainwater. Research "Green Roof" and construct and maintain one at a school, nursing home or other similar operation.

12. Reduce Garbage Toxicity. Research and understand which items are dangerous in household and institutional/industrial waste streams. Produce guides, hold informative sessions, and provide means for people to separate and collect these toxic items instead of discarding in their garbage.

13. Cell Phone and Battery Collection. A subset of the tip above, cell phones can be collected and repurposed to crisis shelters and other uses with no impact to the original owner. Batteries can be collected and returned to a center that can recycle the components.

14. Make A Wild Space. Take a portion of the school or other grassy area that is currently mowed and treated, and make a wildflower or other planted space that requires less water, chemicals and care, and is beneficial to local or migratory animals. Add a bench and walkway and you have created a garden sanctuary! A local garden center may donate or sponsor the park in exchange for some signage or other consideration or recognition.

15. Produce Some Produce. Build a community garden, perhaps at a nursing home or community building. Involve others and set up a community structure that will care for the garden when your project is completed. Participate in the care and harvest of the bounty. Consider donating some of the produce to the food bank or shelters, where fresh food is rare and always appreciated. Consider planting and maintaining an orchard where peaches, apples, pears and other fruits will grow for years to come. Large cans (see #5) and buckets can be used to grow plants in urban settings.

16. Create or Maintain a Hiking Trail. If you have green space nearby, consider trying to develop a public trail. Landowners may be willing to support this action if there is also financial and/or support from the local government. You may have to do more political and financial organizing than actual hoe and shovel work up front, but the resulting peaceful trail will be a great testimony to your dedication and effort.

17. Plastic-Free Dining. Take a survey of the garbage created in your school cafeteria. Try to find ways to reduce the environmental impact (carbon cost, weight, decomposability, etc.) See if you can transform plastic items to paper or metal that can be either reused or renewed without fossil fuels. Work with the procurement group to obtain the new items at lower cost, and determine if the total "life cycle cost" of dishes and silverware is lower than plastic.

18. Mileage Audits. Develop an audit tool to help people maximize their auto mileage. From tire pressure to weight reduction and driving habit changes, you can make a good guide for people to use. Set up an event, perhaps in concert with a car show or car wash, to perform mileage audits for people, pump their tires and give them a guide to keep in their car. Do a before/after road test on a few cars to gather some hard data.

19. Solar Rooftop. Obtain funding and/or supplies to install a pilot solar cell on a rooftop. Connect it to a unique object inside the school such as a moving sculpture, fountain or light display, or light a hallway. Calculate the cost of operation vs the energy cost saved and make a recommendation to the school for larger scale implementation.

20. Green Careers Research. Do some jobs research on the top 20-30 careers that impact Green. Develop a list of degrees and skills which would be needed for these jobs, along with projections of the growth and the economic and geographic locations of the jobs. Work with the guidance conselor to publish this and make available to students as they make decisions about careers. Consider building a slide show or video composite of interesting jobs in Renewable Energy and other areas.

Hopefully this has given you some ideas on good service projects that will have a positive impact on our environment. Have fun and stay green!

10 Reasons Why We Need to Clean Water

If your clean water dilemma is how to clean water marks from glass vases, you're just touching the tip of this iceberg. If your water is clean, should it leave water marks on glass vases?

SECRET: You can clean water marks from glass vases. I don't guarantee this will work on every vase, and urge you to use these ideas at your own risk, but here they are. Mix equal parts of cold tea with vinegar, and dissolve a denture cleaner tablet in the mixture. Or fill the vase with water and drop in 2 Alka Seltzer tablets. Soak your vase overnight in either solution, rinse, and dry.

Ten Reasons Why We Need to Clean Water

10 Reasons Why We Need to Clean Water

1. Clean water is vital to the human body.

The human body is 50 to 70 per cent water, and needs a regular supply of clean water to maintain health. We need clean drinking water. We need clean water for cooking and making beverages. Healthy eating and clean water go hand in hand. We must work to clean water worldwide in order to maintain sufficient sources to supply this need.

2. Clean water is vital to our food.

If we fail to clean water and keep it clean, we will be shut up to a diet of contaminated food. Not only fish, but other meats, fruits, and vegetables will deliver contamination to us. If we want healthful, clean fish to leap forth from rivers, streams, and oceans, we will have to clean water. If we want healthful, organic produce, we will have to clean water used to irrigate produce.

3. Clean water is vital to human health.

Clean drinking water is vital to health, yet the UN and the World Health Organization (WHO) report that 1.1 billion people around the globe lack access to clean drinking water. The health consequences are devastating. The UN attributes 2.2 million deaths annually to poor water and sanitation. If we clean water, provide better sanitation, and teach people how to keep water clean, future generations can enjoy longer and healthier lives.

4. Clean water is essential for water sports.

A swimmer in clean water is safe from illnesses and diseases produced by contaminated and toxic water. A surfer does not have to fear swallowing water in a wipe out. Boaters and others who use our water for recreation can relax without concern about pollutants. Yet, 27 years after the passage of the 1972 Clean Water Act, 40% of our rivers, lakes, and estuaries were still too polluted for safe swimming and similar water sports.

5. Clean water is essential for fish and other wildlife species.

As humans, we must consider the needs of fish, whales, water fowl, and other wildlife species that live in water. We must clean water when there are oil spills, of course, but we must also work to clean water flowing into our oceans, lakes, rivers, and streams. We must clean water for wildlife that does not live in the water, but depends on clean water for health and cleanliness.

6. We need to clean water to cut down on our carbon footprint.

The emissions involved in producing bottled water are astounding. Pablo Päster, Sustainability Engineer and MBA, did a thorough and exhaustive study of the cost of bringing a single liter of Fiji Water to America. He found that bottlers use nearly seven times as much water to bottle it than you actually drink. The total amount of water used to produce and deliver one bottle of imported water is 6.74 kg! In the process of making the bottle, getting water into the bottle, and delivering it to you, 250g of GHG emissions were released.

7. We need to clean water to cut down on refuse.

Each plastic drinking-water bottle takes hundreds of years to biodegrade in a landfill. Many plastic drinking-water bottles litter the countryside. Some will be recycled, but the recycling process is said to pollute the environment with toxic carcinogens. If we clean water so that it is truly free of contaminants, additives, bacteria, and virus, people are less likely to rely on bottled water.

8. Clean rain and snow are not givens.

Rain is just one step in the water cycle. Pure rain does not automatically fall through the universe, filtered by the atmosphere and delivered from pure clouds. Neither does pure snow. The rain, snow, and other precipitation we receive find their way into the sky from bodies of water on earth. If we fail to clean water on earth, we will have increasingly polluted precipitation. Polluted precipitation is harmful to everyone and everything on which it falls.

9. We need clean water for all-around cleanliness.

Whether it's your laundry in the Maytag washer, your carpet beneath the cleaning machine, or your body under the shower, clean water is necessary for all-around cleanliness. From early preschool years onward, children are taught proper hygiene - and it depends on clean water.

10. The consequences of inadequate access to clean water are too great.

Many have expressed growing concern that water wars are more likely in the future than current battles for oil. Where access to clean water is the very essence of life, "no water" may mean "no peace." A failure to clean water now may result in global warfare for future generations.

You may be able to add more reasons. You may substitute different reasons, but the bottom line is still the same. We need to clean water.

It is wiser, and less costly, to keep water clean than to try to clean water that has become dirty and polluted. Will we develop such wisdom for the remaining clean water we have?

10 Most Endangered Species in 2012

There are thousands of species across our planet which are feared to be on the road to extinction. These species could belong to the four-legged travellers of the earth, the winged birds or the marine life. Whatever their habitat, the endangered species are either at risk due to human activities in that area or a change of climate in their habitat which could be due to global warming.

Dinosaurs lived billions of years ago; and perhaps if they were not extinct, humans and other life forms of today would have found a way to live together on the planet Earth. But nature's course made sure that this did not happen and now we try to relive that era, in animated science fictions. Soon many of the species that inhabit the earth today might go extinct and our next generation would forever wonder if they could see one of those animals alive today.

Therefore we have put together a list of 10 most endangered species of today. And as said earlier there are many many more, but some have already got the world's attention, so now it's time to highlight the less famous ones.
The Ivory-Billed Woodpecker

10 Most Endangered Species in 2012

Amongst our list of 10 most endangered species, the Ivory-billed woodpecker is believed to be the one that is most endangered; in fact they are so endangered, that they are believed to be even extinct by now. They were found in the Southeastern area of the US and sightings of this large woodpecker were also seen in Cuba. A rescue mission that started right away after this, has led to some rumors believing that there might be a small population living in Florida or Arkansas, but confirmed news has still not been received.
The Amur Leopard

The Amur Leopard that lived in the snowy and remote areas of Northern China and Korea were already few and rare. And now due to road building, over-logging, encroaching civilization, illegal hunting this beautiful species is also fearing extinction. In fact a recent survey revealed there are only 14 - 20 adults which have been confirmed to be living in a forest.
The Javan Rhinoceros

If you thought that of all the rhinoceros species, the Black Rhino (a.k.a. Diceros Bicornis) was an endangered one, think again. Because according to a survey, it is estimated that only 40 - 60 of the Javan rhinos are left remaining in the Ujung Kulon National Park which is located on the western part of the an Island in Indonesia. Facing extinction because of its precious horn, this rare species came under protection however people still might not be able to save it because of scarce mating population.
The Greater Bamboo Lemur

Madagascar is known for its population of lemurs; however if the illegal hunting and habitat loss continues in that region then it is quite possible that soon the critically endangered species of Lemur - the Greater Bamboo Lemur, will become history, with no live remains of it left.
The Northern Right Whale

The Mako Shark, Blue fin Tuna and the Beluga Sturgeon are some of the members of marine life that are considered to be one of the endangered species. However here we are going to talk of the Northern Right Whale which got its name back in the 1970's ironically by people who are making sure it goes extinct quickly - the fishermen. The Right Whale possess good quantities of oil which is why it is hunt down; moreover it floats atop when dead which makes it easy to handle. It is protected now but it is feared that extinction might not be prevented.
The Cross River Gorilla

This species of the lowland gorilla is found in West Africa; and it is believed that only a few hundred of these are left remaining. This atrocity is for no other reason than due to illegal hunting and that too for food. It has been included in the critically endangered ones as their population is facing a constant decrease for the last 25 years.
Leatherback Sea Turtle

Swimming across the seas and oceans of the whole world, the Leatherback Sea Turtle is the largest turtle which comes out on the sub-tropical beaches to lay its eggs. The fact that people keep on hunting for its eggs, or that fact that the beaches are destroyed is leading to the extinction of Leatherback Sea turtles. Pollution of the sea and ocean waters is also killing the turtles.
The Amur Tiger

The Amur Tiger like the Amur Leopard is believed to be near extinction. The Amur Tiger which was found in cold parts of China and Korea, reduced to a horrid number of 40 - 50 but has rebounded to a number of 500 because the Tiger has gone into protection by the wild life services. Even though its number has increased, it is still not out of danger.
The Chinese Giant Salamander

A unique thing about the Giant Salamander is that it is the world's largest amphibian which can grow up to 6 feet in length. Although it had the advantage of laying almost 500 eggs in one go and that too which remained in protection of the male, it can still go extent. The sad news is that it is not going to be due to a loss in habitat but because it is largely hunt down for its meat. Yes, it is true, it is abundantly eaten in most parts of China.
The Kakapo Parrot

Last and certainly a species left in the least amount of number is the Kakapo parrot. It is the only parrot that remains flightless throughout its life and is also the heaviest amongst all the parrots. Once common throughout the mainland of New Zealand, this endangered species is led to its present state due to the hunt down by rats, cats and dogs. It is now only found living in some islands and less than 150 are left.

My Cat Keeps Sneezing - What to Do When You Have a Cat Sneezing a Lot

Okay. Your cat keeps sneezing. As long as you don't have a cat sneezing blood, this is probably not a case of something really bad like feline leukemia. He may have caught a "cat cold", or may have just got some dust or allergens in his nose. Regardless, if your cat or kitten keeps sneezing, you will want to take a look at some common cat sneezing symptoms to determine what course of action to take, and how serious the problem is.

When you have a cat sneezing a lot, especially if there is cat sneezing and coughing present, something has gone from a not-so-serious issue to a more dangerous health concern. True, your cat loves to investigate and explore its world with its nose, but that little bit of dust, if left untended, can result in a much more serious matter.

In a cat, upper respiratory infection is a very common ailment that can be diagnosed rather easily. If you have cat sneezing and runny nose, and these symptoms are accompanied by loss of appetite, depression, and coughing. The good news is you can keep this from occurring when your cat keeps sneezing if you treat the flu-like symptoms quickly.

My Cat Keeps Sneezing - What to Do When You Have a Cat Sneezing a Lot

But, you ask, how can I treat my cat? I can not afford an expensive vet trip, and hate to see my feline friend stuck and prodded and mad at me. What are your options? You have only two options here other than an expensive, painful vet trip.

If your cat or kitten sneezes periodically, give it a day and see if it stops. It could be that a local environmental effect like dust or dirt has lodged in your pet's nasal passage, and will be sneezed out. But if your kitten or cat keeps sneezing a lot, you can be certain that there is a bigger problem at hand. At this point, we can rule out ignoring the problem, as it can become much more serious, and even lead to feline leukemia or lung problems.

The only available option if your cat keeps sneezing is actually a treatment that has been around since the beginning of time, and a treatment that wild cats use all the time. Using natural herbs and naturally occurring substances and minerals as opposed to chemicals and medicines produced by man is the practice of homeopathy. Many veterinarians and pet experts have been saying for years that our current medicinal practices and pet foods may actually be shortening our beloved pet's lives.

Employing homeopathic, holistic cures found in nature is preferred for many reasons. First, there are no side-effects. Vet cures can have painful side-effects, some of them worse than the symptoms they are meant to cure. Homeopathic cures are also non-intrusive. There is no scaring your cat with a vet, no shots, and no cramming him into a cat carrier. Homeopathic cures are sprinkled or dropped onto your pet's tongue, and that is it. Oh yeah, there is no devastating veterinarian's bill, either.

How Can I Make Her Squirt?

You may be wondering if women are capable of female ejaculation or what is commonly known as squirting or gushing and why is it that many women have never done it. Let us begin by looking at some of the myths and nonsense out there about female ejaculation, and clear up some of the things men have been asking about.

Is it true that squirting is some kind of weird thing that you can only see in porn movies?

Indeed, the act of squirting can be often seen in porn movies. However, female ejaculation is real and is not something made up by anyone. It is a natural part of female sexuality and most women who have ever ejaculated look upon it as an overwhelmingly fantastic sexual experience. Female ejaculation can happen during or before orgasm But the fact is about porn movies - it is a world full of exaggerations and fake acts. In certain scenes, women may be urinating.

How Can I Make Her Squirt?

Women that squirt are actually urinating, right?

Well, squirting and urinating are two different things. Female ejaculation is not urine. It is a fluid that comes from the kidneys passing through the para-urethral glands (often referred to as the female "prostrate glands" or G-spot area) is a bit like the male fluid that carries sperm but without the sperm content. This fluid is clear in color, no smell or has a slightly sweet scent, very unlike the heavier and thicker fluid that you normally see when a woman is "wet" or has an orgasm. This thicker and heavier fluid is actually the vaginal discharge which lubricates and cleans up the vaginal walls as it oozes out during sexual arousal.

However, one ought to take note here is that unlike men, women can ejaculate and urinate at the same time, so it is better for women to urinate first before doing any stimulation of her pleasure points down there.

Now, let us get to the part that I understand a lot of guys are most interested in - How to make YOUR sex partner experience female ejaculation?

Let me first caution you here. Once you train a woman to ejaculate, there is a high likelihood that she will want to keep on doing it quite frequently when you make love. As cool as that can seem to you right now, some women can give off pretty a great amount, and it can make a good mess. So you might require to begin keeping towels nearby the bed, and rest her down on top of them before you begin.

Okay, here is how this can be done:

1. Do not Be Disappointed if not much fluid comes out and need not be FREAKED OUT if a huge amount does come gushing out. Different women ejaculate different amounts-- from a little trickle to a major outburst. One is not better than the other, it is only a function of her anatomy.

2. Delay Her Orgasm

The longer you delay her orgasm, the better the chances that you will be successful in making her squirt. This means a lot of foreplay and sensual touching.

3. Make Her Come With A "Blended Orgasm".

After delaying her orgasm for a long time, she will have built up a great deal of fluid in her para-urethral (Skene's) glands. When you do make her come, you want to build it unhurriedly and then bring her over the edge quickly using a "blended orgasm" - stimulating both her clitoris and G-spot.

There are a few different ways to make sure that you get her to come hard and quick with a blended orgasm when the moment is right, and using one of these methods is the surest way to do the trick.

So, the only part left is-- what is the best way to stimulate her to get to female ejaculation?

4. Use One of These Proven Female Ejaculation Positions

Some women ejaculate easily from many different positions, and they will certainly have remarkable results with all three of these positions. Other women might only respond to one or two of them. Usually one of the first two will work very well.

The first, which is often very effective, is to use your tongue on her clitoris.

The key is to find a rhythm that drives her wild. What you are looking for is an amount of direct stimulation to the tip of the clitoris that is just beyond what she can comfortably deal with. You need to maintain a lot of mental and emotional connection with her while you do this so that you can reassure her that she can be still and that she can "take it." You want to go just past her edge.

When you finally tell her it is alright to let go, you might have to hold her hips still with your weight to keep her from squirming right off the bed.

The key to make this method work is to insert a finger and massage her g-spot at the same time. Get started with some lubricant or cream. The Nipple and Clitoris Stimulating Gel is fantastic as it heightens sensitivity around the vaginal area and it also makes it easier to insert your fingers into her vagina. You can in fact feel the glands fill up behind the g spot as the area swells beneath your fingers.

The second method works even more often and most women will react very powerfully to it. The key is the hand position and the movement. Rest her down on her back, and have her raise her legs up in the air, knees bent. Make a "hook" with your middle finger or both middle and ring-finger. Put your finger/s inside of her, pointing up towards her belly. In this position, you can then place your palm across the top of her vagina and her clitoris.

Applying pressure with the palm across her clitoris, the motion is NOT in-and-out, but rather, up-and-down. As the fingers go up and down against the g-spot, the palm brushes up and down on the clitoris.

NOTE: Use a LOT of lube for this, particularly between the palm and vulva.

After delaying her orgasm as long as possible, you want to use this motion quickly and firmly. Again, this will perhaps get her past the edge of the amount of pleasure she is accustomed to dealing with, and you may have to encourage her verbally, and help her by holding her hips down so that she does not squirm right off the bed.

The final method is a bit more of a trick, but can be even more fun because it involves intercourse.

Have her position herself on top of your penis, but facing away, towards your feet. She can be on her knees, but it may be more effective if she squats over you, and then leans back on her palms so that you are penetrating her at an angle to bump into the G Spot. After that you use one or both hands to stimulate her clitoris. When she feels ready to ejaculate, you may have to withdraw to unblock the duct.

The good news is that in terms of the "technical" and physical aspects of it, this is pretty much all you will ever require to know if you want to get a woman to experience female ejaculation.

The Effect Plastic Bags Have on the Death of Wildlife

Doing something as simple as using reusable shopping bags can save the earth's wildlife. A devastating number of turtles, birds, whales and other animals are killed yearly due to plastic bags being mistaken for food like jellyfish. Once a plastic bag is ingested by an animal, it cannot be digested so it sits in the animal's gut, preventing other food digestion and resulting in an extremely painful and slow death.

A plastic bag can literally take 1000 years before it breaks down so after one animal dies from eating the plastic and its body decays, the plastic is left behind and can be ingested by another animal.

Turtle Food

The Effect Plastic Bags Have on the Death of Wildlife

Approximately 40 percent of autopsies done on turtles confirm the death being due to plastic bags stuck in their intestinal tract. When plastic bags float on the water, they look very similar to jellyfish which are a favorite food source for some turtles. These deaths can be prevented if everyone would simply use reusable grocery bags every time they go to the store.

One turtle in 2007 was found to have more than 50 items in her intestinal tract including nylon rope, plastic bags, cling film, balloons and candy wrappers. The less plastic that enters into the environment, the safer the wildlife will be.

Shameful Seas

A Bryde's whale that became stranded and died on Cairns beach in August, 2000 had an autopsy done to reveal 20 square feet of tightly packed plastic, primarily shopping bags, lodged in its stomach. So many whales like this one die in the ocean where the plastic eventually is exposed back into the water for other sea creatures to feed on, creating a viscous cycle.

It is estimated that over 100,000 marine creatures are killed each year because of plastic pollution. These animals are not dying instantly, they are suffering. Imagine not being able to digest any food and then not being able to eat because of it and literally just starving yourself to death all because of plastic bags and other plastic products. Every time consumers go to the store they make a conscious decision to either use a reusable shopping bag or not. It is not understandable why anyone would still choose to use traditional bags, knowing the harm that they are creating.

Changes Coming?

It is not uncommon to find flamingos, platypus and other animals, strangled from getting tangled in plastic bags and not being able to twist their way out. In Australia in 2008, a crocodile was found dead with 25 plastic bags in its stomach. Additionally, pelicans, seagulls and other birds are found daily with the same cause of death.

Due to these figures and other environmental concerns, many countries such as Bangladesh, Taiwan, China and Italy have either banned plastic bags completely or have issued laws to charge for them, making reusable bags the primary choice.

Sadly, in the United States, plastic industries rally hard to resist possible laws or bans, claiming that jobs will disappear. It is estimated that Americans throw away a minimum of 100 billion bags per year. Some cities, however are taking their own approach. Places like New York City are talking about imposing a six cents tax per plastic bag dispensed. Many stores already offer small incentives to consumers that bring their own Eco-friendly bags with them when doing their shopping.

Small changes are happening but you do not have to wait for city taxes or state laws to make a difference. Stop using plastic bags today to save the animals of tomorrow.

The Effects of Deforestation in our World

Many of the earth's most delicate ecosystems have been affected by rampant and irresponsible deforestation. Although the dire effects are well known and documented by researches around the world, deforestation still persists by those who wish to flout the law. Why are forest ecosystems so valuable and what are the effects of deforestation in our world?

Among the ecosystems that currently exist, forest ecosystem have been widely recognized as one of the most efficient and delicate on earth. Forests are important ecosystems because they hold many important nutrients and help to recycle nutrients too. They are also important because they absorb and hold water thus making them a very rich and porous humus topsoil.

Deforestation happens when trees are cut down on a wide scale. This will lead to widespread disruption of a forest ecosystem. When a forest is cleared, the humus rich topsoil is left exposed leading to a number of dire consequences. The rain that falls on the exposed soil converts that rich topsoil into a sealed-off soil that is moist and muddy. It causes the soil to be washed easily into waterways. What is left behind is poor subsoil that leaves the land vulnerable to more natural erosion. In other words, deforestation leads to massive soil and land erosion.

The Effects of Deforestation in our World

When deforestation happens in tropical rain forests the effects are more devastating. It is because humus topsoil in tropical rain forests is known to be very thin and lacking in nutrients, so when deforestation occurs, the topsoil that is left behind is very vulnerable and will tend to wash away and erode easily. After deforestation in tropical rain forests, the only thing left is very poor nutrient, hard, clay-like subsoil that is not rich enough to sustain most forms of agriculture.

Sediments that are washed away eventually enter our drains, streams and rivers. These eroding sediments are often responsible for clogging up water channel leading to the problem of flooding. Soil erosion upsets surrounding ecosystems and has been known to be responsible for killing off the fishes and flooding reservoirs.

However despite all the ill effects, deforestation still happens around the world at alarming rates, especially in developing countries. A survey carried out by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that 33.8 million trees were cleared between 1990 and 1995 in developing countries. That area would be 3 times the size of France! Why? What is happening? It is because forests are ready source of timber and wealth and after the forests are cleared, there's room for agriculture. Most of the agriculture is directed the to the planting of cash crops and grass and other crops to support greater beef promotion.
